Overdentures are great for patients who wish to have the benefits of dental implants but do not necessarily wish to go through bone grafting and gum grafting surgeries.
Root supported overdentures allow the remaining roots to stay in place. Therefore, the natural bone shrinking that occurs after root extractions does not happen.
Overdentures provide a large degree of stability and do not affect speaking and eating.
An initial consultation will be provided to ensure a patient is a good candidate for the procedure. Following this, a cone beam CT scan may be carried out to make sure there is enough bone available and to ensure that sinus and nerves can be avoided during the implant process.
Implant placement will then be carried out. The patient will be provided with a temporary denture whilst implant-bone integration is taking place.
After 2-3 months, once implant integration has taken place, the overdenture is constructed and attached to the dental implants.
There are two types of implant supported Overdentures. These are ball-retained or bar retained. Which one a patient has will depend on their needs.
At least two dental implants are needed to provide enough support for an implant supported Overdenture. Usually, the dental implants for overdentures are placed in the front of the mouth. This is due to the fact, that most of the time, there is more bone in this area. Also a lack of vital structures such as nerves in the front of the mouth means that there is less likelihood of the dental implants causing complications.
The crown overdenture (or telescopic crown / telescopic bridge / telescopic denture) also known as the German crown overdenture was developed in Germany and is even now one of the most used dental procedures there to construct removable dentures.
The procedure involves fitting the remaining natural teeth with inner metal crowns, followed by outer crowns as part of an overdenture that can be removed by the patient. This technique ensures that bite stress is distributed evenly between each tooth, protecting the remaining teeth and the end result looks quite natural. This technique is also suitable for cases of missing back molars
Some of the benefits of the telescopic overdentures include the prevention of bone loss, esthetic appeal, improved speech (when compared with other types of dentures), proper jaw alignment, and improved chewing efficiency. These overdenture systems can last a lifetime and increase chewing power by up to 300%.
